I've taught Autodesk products (AutoCAD, Inventor, and Revit) to students in the same school for 17 years. This year, I've had enough of the terrible micromanagement and administration, so I've taken a job elsewhere. Since the Autodesk products are tied to my Autodesk Education account, I followed the license rule to the letter - if I am not employed there, the software cannot be used.

So, I have entered an imaging ticket for the summer. This means the machines will be completely wiped clean of any installed software.

Although the license is good for another 2 years, it would be tied to me, and I will no longer be an employee. Since our terrible IT department refuses to touch Autodesk with a 10-foot pole and it has fallen on me to install the software for my students, I wonder who they will dump this task on next year. That's right, instead of creating a deployment package, I have been expected to install it on every single machine as a standalone license. I did not get paid extra for this, it was just expect

Good luck, whoever takes over. The kids are great. The admin, IT, and district management just s☐ k. In my new district, IT actually has a brain and deploys the software without requiring a teacher to work for free for three days to prep the lab.

CoderJoe1 11 hr. ago I worked for a large corporation. IT got vigilant locking down unauthorized software so they started deleting software tools I created for my team. When I asked them to stop, they demanded I show proof of purchase for the software. I showed them my paystub as proof. They finally got it.

. UniversalCoupler - 9 hr. ago So you created software tools and gave it free to your company? Does that corporation own them now? Did you create those tools at work?
  • 09
CoderJoe1 9 hr. ago I created them at work so my employer owns them. They are highly specialized to my team so they're not commercially viable.

Mtndrums 9 hr. ago HE didn't delete them. IT did, thinking it was pirated instead of being created in- house. Worst thing that's going to happen to IT is they'll get told to verify before deleting.

Advanced_Parsnip 12 hr. ago It took me a few years to convince IT to allow it to be installed, but it's subscription based where I am and a yearly license renewal. Only starting to teach myself Fusion 360 now that there are 3D printers.

Harry_Smutter · 9 hr. ago Wow, good on your for leaving. That district is backwards. I build the images for my district, and AutoDesk is refreshed each year along with the image. It's also tied to an account specifically created for software management. Basically, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, gets tied to any one person. It's all global so we don't run into stuff like that. Also, giving users admin privileges is terrible and should never be done.

Geminii27 4 hr. ago They're going to try and come after you for it, of course. Do have a lawyer lined up, or even have one write a pre-emptive letter after reviewing your license, so you'll be able to whip it out on the spot, as it were. Make sure to emphasize that the school does not have an Autodesk license, has never had one, and that you advised them of the situation on [date] and [date] as per the emails from years ago you were forward-thinking enough to print out copies of before you left.

I don't know how much the school will really care, no matter how much they bluster and threaten. They got 17 years out of you, including all the work you did for free. They'll be trying for that with your replacement, too.

kozak 5 hr. ago Since the Autodesk products are tied to my Autodesk Education account, I followed the license rule to the letter - if I am not employed there, the software cannot be used. So the license and agreement is tied to your account? Is the agreement between you and Autodesk or between your employer and Autodesk?
  • 16
Cuz if it is between your employer and audodesk, then whatever email address makes no difference. It's not yours, you at best manage and administrate the software. I'd be very careful about removing them cuz otherwise your malicious compliance might not you some legal troubles.
  • 17
And Even if the agreement is between you and Autodesk, you might find yourself in trouble simply for using company funds for something that you didn't legally tie to the company.
